Home Beekeeping is a fun and rewarding activity that most people can get into without much hassle of with the minimum of experience. Whilst commercial beekeeping does require a high level of skill, home beekeeping is easy and within most people’s grasp.
That is not to say that as a home beekeeper, you can’t make money from selling your honey. Of course you can. In fact, the demand for locally produced honey is continually on the increase and home beekeeping can translate into a good stream of income if you observe some simple techniques.
There is no doubt that the beekeeping industry has come a long way from it’s simple roots, but even though there is plenty of beekeeping clothes, a complex beekeeping kit, and a plethora of beekeeping hive equipment on the market, the average home beekeeper doesn’t need much at all to get started. As long as you have the basics you can get started with your home beekeeping in no time at all.

And that’s it. You are ready to get into bee beekeeping as easy as that. For the typical home beekeepers that have not been traditionally taught, you must learn as much about the biology of the bees as possible and understand what they eat and how they live in their colony. The other important thing to learn about bee beekeeping is how the seasons affect the activities of the bees. For example, winter months typically kill off flowers that bees live off, so they regurgitate and store their own food in order to survive. It is this process that produces honey.
If you are considering bee beekeeping, then you should also learn to recognize the types of creatures that will try to prey on your bees. These include yellow jackets, wasps, mites and hornets. There are many ways to learn the steps involved in bee beekeeping; you can speak to other beekeepers, you read books and training manuals, and you can learn through your own experience. Obviously, the latter is the best way to learn, but also the most immediate when you get it wrong! So I would recommend reading and speaking to as many beekeepers as possible.
Once you have a good grasp of what bee beekeeping entails then you need to familiarize yourself with beekeeping clothes and the beekeeping kit, which will include things like a smoker and some beekeeping hive tools. Again, these are not difficult to become acquainted with and you can use tools and odd bits and bobs lying around the house for many of the beekeeping jobs. Remember, beekeeping should be a fun and enjoyable activity. Yes you can make money from it too, but remember to enjoy the process along the way.
