Beekeeping, also referred to as apiculture is keeping of bees mostly in human-made hives for the production of honey and its by-products. The by-products include propolis, beeswax and flower pollen. Due to the increase in beekeeping and the popularity it has gained, not many people know someone who sells beeswax and other bee products. So who sells beeswax? We'll cover that later.
Honey bees are the most well-known bees and the most economical. The amount of honey produced by bees is dependent on the availability of nectar, and the season. Just like termites, bees are social insects that are vegetarian. These bees can be kept almost anywhere as long as there is the availability of flowering plants that produce pollen and nectar.
During summer, the beekeeper must provide enough water to regulate the temperatures in the colony, making sure it's not too hot. In winter, beehives must be placed in protected areas to prevent the death of the bees due to extremely low temperatures. Visitation by honey bees' between different varieties of plants promotes hybridization. This helps the sparse populations survive, and the mutual dependency has resulted in co-evolution.Beehives should be away from playgrounds or any other public places. Among honeybees, there are four different types of that breed, and each breed has its functions in the colony.
The Basics of Bees
Before we answer the question “who sells beeswax,” first we'll cover some basics about bees.
This is the fertile female responsible for producing eggs and is the heart and soul of the bee colony. The queen bee is the reason for almost everything the rest of the bees in the colony do. The worker bees pay close attention to the queen tending to her basic needs. The queen bee can live for up to 2 years or more, but most beekeepers replace their queens after a while for maximum productivity. The size of the queen is much larger than other bees. It lays eggs between 1000 and 1500 both fertilized and unfertilized.
Fertilized eggs develop into females while unfertilized eggs develop into males. There is normally one queen in every colony. It produces chemicals called pheromones that affect the behavior of the other bees in the colony.The queen bee lays her eggs in cells built by the worker bees. Young bees developing pass through four stages to develop into young adults. The egg which develops into a larva, the larva develops into an inactive pupa, which on the last stage, develops into a young adult.
Theses are underdeveloped female bees that do all the work in the colony. Every colony can have 3000-60000 workers. Worker bees perform several functions in the colony;
Besides that, they also pick pollen and nectar from flowers and plants.
These are haploid fertile male bees that. They are stingless, and their sole purpose is to fertilize the queen. They fly from the beehive and mate in the air with queens from other colonies. A colony can have up to 600 drones during summer and spring. They only live for a short period of time and die as soon as they fertilize the queen.
Beeswax is a natural wax formed by worker bees in the colony. The wax is created by wax-producing glands in the abdominal segments of the bees who discard it in the hive. It is then collected by worker bees to form cells for the storage of honey and protection of the pupa. Chemically, beeswax is made up of fatty acids and long chain alcohols. Primarily, it is used by worker bees to make honeycombs.
New wax is colorless but becomes opaque or yellow in color due to mixing with pollen and propolis. When beekeepers start harvesting the honey, they cut off wax caps in each honeycomb with a knife. There is a need for beeswax in the market because this product provides a safe and all natural alternative to otherwise toxins filled products which we buy and use every day.
In order to be certified as organic, chemicals should not be used within two to three miles of the beehive. A lot of industries worldwide are not regulated by the government and are self-regulating. There are no requirements for product safety.So until these controversial ingredients in products are regulated or labeled with warnings, people are adopting the use of natural products more. Products like beeswax are gaining a lot of popularity for being natural and toxin free.
Chemicals found in products we use every day can result in diseases. Widespread exposure to an environment with products full of toxins threatens the overall health of human beings.
Some of these chemicals include phthalates, lead, mercury, alcohols, and organophosphates and is found in shampoos, soaps, food plastics, furniture and almost all products around us. Researchers are concerned that a lot of these chemicals may be carcinogenic and cause hormonal imbalance. Beeswax provides a safe, natural alternative.
